(Tokyo, Japan) – Symmetry Dimensions Inc., a software developer (registered in Delaware, US; hereinafter referred to as ‘SYMMETRY’; Shogo Numakura, CEO) announces that they are partnering with NTT Docomo, Inc. (headquartered in Tokyo, Japan; hereinafter referred to as ‘Docomo’; President and CEO Kazuhiro Yoshizawa) and HP Japan Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as ‘HP’) to realize the next generation in infrastructure and the built environment by experimenting with the development of a digital twin.*

As part of the aforementioned experiment, we are using immersive technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality to visualize massive point cloud data.* This is done by taking large-scale scans via 3D laser scanners and drones, processing the data on an HP’s high-performance workstation, and using the Docomo Open Innovation CloudTM to send the data to devices over a 5G network.***
This technology will allow construction professionals to visit physical sites and takes measurements and verify site conditions in a digital environment with ease. Eventually, as more physical infrastructure is scanned, operators will be able to monitor and control infrastructure from a digital device and predict maintenance needs with greater foresight and accuracy.
Initial experiments have proven to be able to locally process point cloud data containing more than 20,000,000 points and display it on a virtual reality headset within seconds, allowing the user to move around the model at an average frame rate of 70-90 fps. Continued experimentation will focus on streaming the massive point cloud data from a high-spec workstation over a 5G network to any device capable of receiving a network signal, regardless of hardware specifications.
* "Digital twin" is a term used to describe the digital representation of a physical object that is able to relay data in real time. ** "Point cloud data" is the result of a 3D scan of a physical object or space represented as a series of data points in the form of a digital 3D model. *** "Docomo Open Innovation CloudTM" is a trademark of NTT Docomo, Inc..
